For years, Blue Cross Blue Shield has covered traditional drug treatment. This is categorized as inpatient and outpatient treatment. These methods have worked wonders for many people who lead happy and productive lives. But, these programs aren’t without criticism. Perhaps, treatment facilities deserve some of the blame. Humans are unique and a one-size-fits-all method isn’t going to work for everyone. There are plenty of treatment centers that will customize a treatment program to suit their clients.
BCBS covers treatment for alcoholism and drug abuse. It covers treatment for prescription pills and illicit drugs. Addiction treatment can be short term. It’s usually 30 days or less but can last up to 90 days. However, it can last up to a year, depending on several factors.
Treatments for Drug & Alcohol Addiction
- Medication assisted treatment (MAT)
- Behavioral counseling, both individual one-on-one and group therapy

- Prescription medication, or maintenance drugs, which help recovering addicts from relapsing. The most popular drugs to treat opioid addiction are Methadone, buprenophine and naltrexone. Naltrexone, Acamprosate and Disulfiram are used to treat alcohol abuse.
A new type of Blue Cross Blue Shield addiction treatment model.
There’s growing research that shows addiction treatment recovery at home could yield positive and long-lasting effects for recovering addicts. Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Hampshire has approved a new program which allows individuals to get addiction treatment at the comfort of their own home. The treatment model is based on the visiting nurse model. The addiction treatment team consists of a psychiatrist, nurse, a family and marriage therapist, individual therapist and an addiction advisor who deliver treatment and therapies to recovering addicts in their own homes.
